Giethoorn – The place where lakes stood still

Giethoorn

Whenever you are in Netherlands – you would be suggested to visit Giethoorn, either by google or by your friends. But what is the reason behind?

Giethoorn is no doubt a picturesque village in the province of Netherlands, and known for unique charm, tranquil atmosphere, and friendly vibes. It is often compared to the Venice and some even call it “Dutch Venice”.

It is surrounded with roads but absorbed around the canals. Yes! Its true, the local mode of transportation inside the village is by walk or by boat. You will find small bridges over the canals at many places, and except for the private properties you are free to roam around in the village.

The channel of canals is well connected and networked and you can easily find the supportiveness of the locals here.

The houses are built beautifully using the old school method combined with new modern techniques, but their view is marvellous. I think majority of the tourists there think of buying a house here for their vacations or retirement.

As soon as you enter you might not feel a “difference” between a outskirts village and Giethoorn, but that feeling goes away as soon as you walk inside and mesmerized by the canals, eating outlets, old homes, small cross over bridges and uncountable number of cameras.

You can take your own private boat, or just rent a boat or maybe just don’t take it you are going to enjoy. Go in, roam around, picnic with friends and family, have good food, nice company – Giethoorn is a complete package of tourism.

In the food court near the canal, the food tastes better because of the aura and environment around us. And you can get almost everything here be it vegan, vegetarian (although less option) or non-vegetarian.

The story as told by your tourist guide will amaze you and would ignite a series of questions and adventures. Originally created for peat extraction, which eventually lead to formation of stagnant water and then to lakes, Giethoorn no doubt is a friendly waterways village.
